Freelancers – This one’s for you — Workflow: Freelance. Just wanting to share the wealth. This site is a daily stop on my morning reading list. Kind of like coffee, I can’t start the day without it. If it’s not in your feed it should be.

This from one of the biggies in the blog business. There is a corollary to this that I hear all the time in the small Midwestern town that I find myself in for the time being and that is, “you’re not from here are you?” I have learned that this is idiot speak for,”we’re really in the dark about anything new or different and don’t like outsiders introducing new ideas that will just get in the way of how we do things.”
This mindset applies to virtually everything from how the local news is reported to restaurant menus to art and culture and to how some small businesses view graphic design. That’s not to say that there aren’t pockets of intelligent life and forward thinking individuals because there are and for that I am grateful on a daily basis. Having lived in Washington, DC almost all of my life, I often wonder what life in the “heartland” was like before the internet. I’m quite sure had I been kidnapped as a child and forced to live in Gooberville, USA I would have developed the mentality of a POW and become obsessed with escaping back to where I came from.
So the moral of this story is thank your deity of choice that you have broadband internet access. It may save your sanity if not your life.
If you do design work for a living you probably are familiar with Shutterstock and their high quality image library. You may not be so familiar with their newsletter It is full of useful tricks and tips and even if you’ve been designing for a long time you’ll probably find something that makes you say, “Cool, I didn’t know that.” Check them out.
