And why does this not surprise anyone? Ever since the recession began those businesses that were able to survive did so by adopting the “do more with less” business model. The beauty of this model is that it can be applied to any business of any size and serving any market from hospitals to advertising agencies and everything in between.

From the perspective of the employer/business owner this is a great time to be alive. They have motivated and loyal employees who will do most anything to keep their jobs. The amount of work place complaining I would suspect has dropped dramatically. And probably most importantly, the employer can stop the disingenuous conversation with the employee that starts out with some variant of, “we are all like a family here at company X.”

So while their is no doubt that businesses are doing better and the bottom line is looking good, it might be wise to remember that the unemployment lines are just as long.

Before I was laid off from my last corporate job as a graphic designer the recession was already taking hold and the handwriting was on the wall for me and many, many others. Fortunately for me these events propelled me into my freelance design business full time. Others, clearly have not been so blessed. The phrase that stuck in my head and that continues to typify the new business model for companies and industries large and small is, “Do more with less.” This has always been standard practice in times that required budget cutting and cost management. What’s different now I think is that it has become institutionalized as a corporate business plan. Employees have always been expendable and replaceable. Anyone who believes the nonsense that an employer sees you as a member of their family and cares about you as a person is a naive fool. Now more than ever the employee/employer relationship is adversarial. If hiring back laid off employees means smaller profits, the decision is a no brainer for the business owner who now has fewer but more motivated employees who have finally come to terms with their own expendability and the true nature of the business model in which they find themselves employed.

Is this good or bad in the long term? I don’t really know the answer to that. What I do know is that the disingenuous, self serving, posturing of employers who like to tell themselves how well they treat their employees is so over!
